CRYSTAL OF THE MONTH: CHRYSOCOLLA

September, 2001

Chrysocolla is a copper mineral with its color ranging from blue to green to blue-green, with sometimes black or brown. The highest quality of chrysocolla is known as Gem Silica. Another form known as Drusy Chrysocolla is often found with sparkling little crystals of white quartz on one or more faces. This impregnation of quartz adds a hardness and stability to this soft mineral. Chrysocolla is frequently found in the southwest United States, especially Arizona, and it is often a clue to ore prospectors that copper deposits may be nearby.

This mineral forms as acicular, microscopic crystals, in radiating groups or in close-packed aggregates. It also occurs in massive, earthy, cryptocrystalline and botryoidal habits. This mineral is translucent to nearly opaque and has a vitreous to earthy luster.

This mineral works especially well with the heart and throat chakras. It creates a gentle, soothing and friendly vibration, flushing and healing heart blocks. Use it to enhance flexibility, self-forgiveness, peace of heart, patience, and in allowing for differences with others. It keeps one in light, love and healing daily.

At the throat chakra, it can give balance and strength in communication and expression; assists one in knowing when silence is the best choice in a situation. Use it for grounding in transmitting situations to further stabilize and balance energies. Also useful in purifying the home environment.

Chrysocolla has been known to aid in preventing ulcers, digestive problems and arthritic conditions. It strengthens the lungs and thyroid gland and also enhances one’s metabolism. It is excellent for female disorders.

Gem Silica, a more evolved form of chrysocolla, increases the rate at which energies can be stabilized and balanced because of its increased quality. It also stimulates the crown chakra and can align the physical structure to the etheric.

Drusy Chrysocolla, with the appearance of quartz crystals, unites the energies of chrysocolla with the directive force of quartz to accelerate the process in which the chrysocolla is being used; an intensifier.

Chrysocolla is often found with other minerals such as malachite, azurite, turquoise. The famous Eilat stone, found in Israel, is comprised of chrysocolla, turquoise and malachite. We are pleased to offer this month many varieties of chrysocolla: Gem Silica, Drusy Chrysocolla, rough specimens of chrysocolla in many different sizes, Eilat Stone, combination specimens of chrysocolla, azurite and malachite.

Smithsonite is a beautiful mineral of sea green crystals and rounded mounds that sparkle with a pearly and sometimes druzy quality. Some of the most beautiful green to blue-green specimens are found in the southwest U.S. and Mexico, which is the variety we are presenting this month.

Scientifically, Smithsonite is a zinc carbonate of the calcite group, crystalizing in the form of botryoidal structures, scalenohedral crystals, rhombohedral crystals with curved faces, crusts, grains, masses or stalactites. It can be found in colors ranging from white, gray, yellow, green, blue-green, blue, brown and pinkish purple. This mineral was named for the Englishman, James Smithson, the founder of the Smithsonian Institute.

The green to bluish-green color of this stone creates a receptive environment for peace and calmness, often smoothing over uncomfortable situations. Kindness, charisma and congeniality are attributes of the energies of this stone. Enhancing leadership abilities, it also assists in smoother communications, perceptiveness and expansion into new areas. Smithsonite harmonizes and aligns the fourth, fifth and sixth chakras, the centers for the heart, throat (communications) and third eye (clear sight). Smithsonite is known to assist in strengthening one’s psychic abilities, especially in clairvoyance.

With its calming and soothing nature, it aids in meditation receptivity and clarity. Likewise, it increases insight via dreams and it can improve dream recall. Hold it in your hands or keep it on an altar nearby while meditating; and near your bedside when sleeping.

This mineral has been known to alleviate problems with the immune system and aid in sinus and digestive disorders. It has also been known to assist in the treatment of alcoholism, skin irritations and osteoporosis. As is the case with all green stones, it works effectively in the healing of the physical body.

Amethyst is a translucent purple quartz, most often found in crystal points grown on a base, and is located throughout the world. The color ranges from deep purple to pale lavender depending on the amount of iron content within the amethyst. The deepest purple amethyst comes from Uruguay, Siberia, Africa and Colorado. The most common occurrence of amethyst is in Brazil, a medium purple color.

Amethyst is a stone of spirituality. It can primarily assist in controlling the emotions and for providing clarity of thought. It balances the energies of the intellectual, emotional and physical aspects of the body; it clears the aurithic field bringing stability, strength and peace to the individual. It is an excellent stone for meditation, in helping one to enter and maintain that meditative state.

Amethyst promotes psychic abilities, imagery and quieting of the mind. Wear or sleep with this stone to reduce anger, impatience, and insomnia. It helps with headaches, eyes, scalp, hair, pituitary gland, pineal gland, and in the balancing of blood sugar.

Historically, the stone has been worn to protect against intoxication. Taken from Greek legend, the goddess Diana turned her nymph, Amethyst, into rock crystal to protect her from the amorous advances of Bacchus. Upon discovering this, Bacchus was so heartbroken, he immediately poured his goblet of wine over the stone, turning it purple. Subsequently, throughout history, amethyst has often been worn as a symbol of temperance.

Amethyst can be purchased in large clusters, small clusters, large points, Ema eggs, chevrons, tumbled stones and small African amethyst nuggets. We’ve created a front table display of various types of amethyst from which you can choose the best one for you! In this day and age with our hectic pace of life, it is a stone everyone should carry!

CRYSTAL OF THE MONTH: CANDLE QUARTZ

QUARTZ - CANDLE: An elestiated formation of quartz found in Madagascar. The name "candle" depicts the image of dripping wax after a candle has been burning. (See photo above.) This is a stone of amplification. By placing four stones of the same type (e.g., amethyst) in north/south/east/west positions around the candle quartz, the energy of the amethyst will be enhanced by the candle quartz. Useful for meditation or healing purposes.

This is a stone for the luminaries of our Earth, providing thought transmission within the physical realm and between other worlds. Information transmitted is generally for the enhancement of those of this Earth, for the total structure of humanity and for the healing of this planet.

It provides insight into the importance and use of the physical body as a vehicle in this life. It helps one to go within and understand how one allows damage and illness to occur within the body and assists one in controlling these issues, whether physical, mental or emotional. Understandably, candle quartz is a stone aiding in tranquillity, dissipating the tedious and oppressive from one’s being and environment. It creates greater illumination and insight into one’s life.

Physically, the stone has been used to assist in assimilation and conversion of energy of carbohydrates and to regulate the flow of insulin in the bloodstream. Can assist in strengthening the entire body, helpful in the absorption of nutrients and in increasing the circulatory flows to muscle tissue. Has also been used in the treatment of headaches.
